Be Gentle, Be Faithful: Daily Meditations
for Busy Christians
by James Stephen Behrens
Description - The book is meant for busy Christians,
so Behren's daily reflections are short-one or two paragraphs
long. It will not take much time each day to read his thoughts
but many will stay with the reader all day long. They are
personal, often humorous, but always thought provoking.
. . . After the year is over and the book is finished, the
reader will have two options: read it joyfully again or
pass it on to someone else . . . .
Reviewer (Amazon) - This book is full of "story
sparks" that only take seconds to read but open the
doors to considerable wisdom and hope - with humor as a
bonus. The deft way that each is connected to a few lines
of well-chosen scriptures breaks open that medium as well,
connecting it unforgettably to lived experience.

The Joy in Loving : A Guide to Daily Living
With Mother Teresa
by Teresa, Jaya Chaliha (Compiler), Edward De Joly (Compiler),
Edward Le Joly (Compiler)
Description - A treasury of meditations, prayers,
and reflections, one for each day of the year, from one
of the most revered figures of our time. The provocative
ideas and touching insights found in The Joy in Loving
spring from incidents in Mother Teresa's own remarkable
life. She speaks of men and women who have lived and died
uncomplainingly, even in the midst of great poverty and
deprivation; of wealthy businessmen whose indifference has
been transformed into compassion and charity, and of her
encounters
Reviewer (Amazon) - Writing this the day after a
school shooting drives home how violent our world becomes,
while other worlds, though poor, are at peace. This is why
I like this book. It reminds one of what true values are,
or, should be. There is a state of grace associated with
this book, and God do we need some grace these days.

The Way of St. Francis : Teachings and
Practices for Daily Life
by Murray Bodo (Reader)
Description - Challenges the reader
with a renewed understanding of the saint: a Francis who
shows us a way of life both stimulating and troubling, who
asks us to look again at the possibilities within us and
around us, and to whom we turn repeatedly in interpreting
our own human experience of God. The Franciscan way helps,
transforms and renews us. The book is composed of chapters
on ways of letting go, of achieving poverty, simplicity
and nonviolence.
Reviewer (Amazon) - Fr. Bodo has been
so interested in St. Francis for so many years that his
depth of understanding is thought-provoking and often startling.
Every chapter has some dimension of Francis, the contemplative
life, and the lessons of Francescan living that are informative
to me personally and important to me Spiritually. This is
a book that I will re-read a number of times to try to absorb
as many of the ideas as my mind will permit. I am most thankful
to have discovered this gem written about one of the most
important mystics of all history.

More Daily Prayers for Busy People
by William J. O'Malley
Description -
Reviewer (Amazon) - William J. O'Malley
writes from his own experience - with which most of us can
identify. Speaking from the frustration spawned by the frenetic
pace of life, the unending demands, the gut-wrenching sorrow
of another's pain, he reflects confidence that God will
hear, and the generous response of a loving, understanding
God. His little books are a gift to all who scrabble for
words to express their feelings and their needs. They provide
the words, but they also inspire our own expressions.
Excerpt - PSALM
God, I often stumble into envying the smug,
the sleek and sly, the arrogantly disdainful,
their skins too thick to suffer grief or doubt,
their hearts as sensitive to pain as arrowheads.
They wear their hubris like a chain of gold
and swathe themselves in icy callousness.
People admire their toughness and their drive,
their swagger, their cool and cocky contempt for you.
Am I fool to cling to my integrity?
Is it for nothing that I go on trusting you,
when you seem, at least, to betray me every hour?
But the bitter blindness melted like a dream at dawn,
and I saw the emptiness within their armour,
the soulless shells shambling in the dark.
Within my indocile body and my unruly mind,
You dwell at my inmost centre like a flame,
a compass drawn home through darkness into light.
